List of Tournament Formats

This list will name and define our tournament time controls and formats

Swiss Tournament

Players are not eliminated, they face off against random opponents and the player with the highest amount of points after all the rounds win. If a tiebreaker is required, there are several options in a swiss tournament for this:

1) If one of the players have more wins than the other, the player with more wins the tiebreak.

2) The players can play an Armageddon chess match (two people tiebreak only)

3) You can get the tie-breaking players to play with each other.

Draw = 0.5 point

Win = 1 point
Loss = 0 points

Round Robin Tournament

Players are not eliminated, they face off against all other opponents and the player with the highest amount of points after all the rounds win. This type of tournament is longer than the others and is rare. Can be combined with a knockout tournament for efficiency. If a tiebreaker is required, there are several options to do this:

1) If one of the players have more wins than the other, the player with more wins the tiebreak.

2) The players can play an Armageddon chess match (two people tiebreak only)

3) You can get the tie-breaking players to play with each other.


Draw = 0.5 point

Win = 1 point
Loss = 0 points

Knockout Tournament

Players are eliminated upon loss, they face off against random opponents, the last player remaining wins. Can be combined with a round robin tournament for equality. In the rare event of a tiebreak there are several options:

1) The two players can play an Armageddon chess match.

2) The two players can keep playing until the result is not a draw.

Variant Tournament

This type of tournament is a tournament which is a chess variant. The most common types of tournament variants are: Bughouse, Crazy house, Chess 960 and anti-chess (in anti-chess promoting to a king is possible).

 

Bullet

Extremely fast time control, ranges from 1 min to 3 min per player.

2|1 is two minutes with 1 second gained every move.
 

Blitz

Fast-paced time control, ranges from 3 min to 5min per player.

3|2 is 3 minutes with 2 seconds gained with every move.
 

Rapid

A slower time control- 10 min to 30 min per player. 15|10 is 15 minutes with 10 seconds gained every move.

Armageddon Chess Match

A special type of chess match that will decide a tiebreaker. Only works for a two person tiebreaker. The White player will get 5 minutes and the Black player will get 4 minutes. However, if the game results in a draw, Black will win.
